Chompy Creations Status

Welp it’s been two months since my last post. Here’s what’s up…

The Kickstarter campaign for Bump’N'Brawl fell through, big surprise. However it proved to be a useful to promote Bump’N'Brawl and to receive some feedback. For instance we now know that there would be huge support for the game amongst the Linux community. Many Linux users, including myself, want to see more game available for it.

At any rate, both myself and Renoki have both had to slow down on BnB and focus on finding paid work. We’re still working on it though, I’ve been slowly pushing along with setting up the menus that will allow the player to setup and enter a match. I keep thinking to myself that it’d be so much easier to setup the menus as a web site, I can pump out web sites quickly! It seems like there would be a few ways that could work but it doesn’t really seem practical.

DreamSphere is something we plan to pick back up as well, but it’s on hold at the moment. We started Bump’N'Brawl as a project to be completed quickly, but we got a bit more ambitious and wanted to build a better game then we originally intended. For that matter DreamSphere was a fairly ambitious project for a team of two to take on and Bump’N'Brawl is proving to be something that’s a bit more ideal for our team size.

I silently changed the site design. Chompy Creations is a video game creation team now, we no longer offer any sort of digital media services. So the new design reflects that.

The New 3D Chompy

Due to various server issues as of late Chompy Creations got rolled back a bit. Now I’ve got two new servers setup and things are going pretty swell.

Me and Renoki have been working on refining our techniques, so nothing much new has happened with DreamSphere lately. However check out this 3D Chompy…

Chompy In 3D

3D Chompy is a bit weird, but don't worry he's a nice guy...once you get to know him!

Our good friend BitFox (http://xbitfox.deviantart.com/) drew up the original concept for that Chompy. Then Renoki modeled and animated him. They both did a kick ass job! Now as for what we’re using this character for… my lips are sealed!

A Social Chomp

Some assorted bloggy stuff…

Chompy Creations finally got a twitter account. Yeah! I also bought the domains chomp.co and nso.me to use for URL shortening stuff… chomp.co…maybe someone will buy that off me for 1 million dollars…yeah right…I can dream! So at the top of every post there will now be a shortened URL for use with your tweets… cause Chompy Creations stuff is totally the happening thing to tweet about! Mainly though, I’m stickler for tiny URLs… people rarely seem to be able to even remember something like chompycreations.com, but how about chomp.co?!

The links to the Chompy Creations Facebook page and Twitter account are at the top right of every page. If I might ask a favor… like the Chompy Creations Facebook page!

UpChomp, being the open source project that it is, and developed using Git version control is now on GitHub! It’s an even easier way for folks to quickly check out my awesome/horrible programming skills!

DreamSphere’s website and Chompy Creations page has been updated with the latest version of the game. We’re calling it ‘rendition #3′ as it’s gone through essentially three notable different versions. Check it out here!

The Service’s page makes a return! We’re teaming up with designer Chad White to give our customer’s more professional looking website designs! All our WordPress packages are hosted on our very own ChompServ with the backend pages secured behind SSL! Feel safe knowing your password and content are secure!

Slight Renovation

This site has just undergone some slight renovation. The Portfolio page is now divided into categories. This was so I could add a section for websites I’ve only coded. Most of the time a 3rd party does the graphic design for a website and I merely do the coding… however that leaves me without much to show in my portfolio. So I wanted to have a way to show off these ‘coded’ sites without leading people to believe I also did the graphics.

A week or two ago I posted about getting all my servers IPV6 ready. I am happy to say that almost all my websites and the sites that I host are accessible over IPV6 now. As I said before this doesn’t really mean anything to anyone at the moment… but it’s always good to be ready for something that everyone will inevitably have to have.

Finally DreamSphere’s website has been updated with some new information about the game in it’s current state. Check it out here… dreamspheregame.com.

We All ChomPlay!

A while back I posted a video showing some of DreamSphere’s game play. It opened with a Chompy logo I had yet to discuss. It was a name I was playing around with for my game team as a way to separate my gaming projects from my other (mostly web) projects. The name was “ChomPlay,” which is supposed to be Chomp Play. I like short and simple names and this fits. I’ve asked friends what they thought about it and have gotten rather mixed results. Some like its “chessiness,” others just think it’s…well… stupid. Me personally… I love it!

So will DreamSphere be released by ChomPlay or just simply Chompy Creations? Who knows.

Anyways… over the past few weeks DreamSphere has been sort of restarted… but I’ve had a lot more time on my hands and have made heaps full of progress. At this point I still hope to make my December goal of having a release. I hope to have a small prototype ready by the end of August. We will inevitably need testers, but more on that later. We hope to provide some sort of early access pass to a beta version of the game, probably around October. This is all assuming both of us(me and Renoki) continue to be able to work on the game at the same pace we current are.

I’m just going to leave this here…

DreamSphere Character Creation

Email is ‘E’-Tastic!

To anyone who might have tried to send me an email from my @chompy.co account I most likely did not receive it. I recently setup ‘chompy.co’ on my own DNS server and was slightly oblivious to the fact that doing so might screw up all emails on that domain. Anyways we’re back in business now!

Update?! Sorry no DreamSphere news, I reached a point where things were getting rather difficult in DreamSphere so I decided to take a break in favor of another much simpler project. I don’t want to release any major details yet but I will say it’s a game with Chompy and will be available for Windows/Mac/Linux and…wait for it… Android! The game has already been tested and is working on my Android device. I will also say that the game is very nearly finished, I hope to have it ready in 2-3 weeks.

Merry Chompmas!!

Chompmas 2011

Lookie there! Chompy has a present for you! He’s a pretty jolly fellow any time of the year if you ask me.

So what’s happening with me? Nothing really, I’ve been meaning to find time to work on DreamSphere of course. I shall make it my new years resolution to find about 5-10hrs a week to work on it. The goal, as I believe I have said before, is to have it finished in time to enter the Indie Game Challenge for 2011, I’ve already missed two of em, and I sure hope there is a third one!

Are you Creeped Out Yet?

This may scare you…

Chompy in 3D
Yep, Chompy is 3D now. I am working on making a small game with Chompy in it to take a break from DreamSphere for a while. I’ll reveal more about the game later, I think I’ve freaked everyone out enough for now.

UPDATE: Yeah the game never happened… but it was pretty cool making Chompy in 3D. At some point there will be a Chompy video game, no doubt about that!

New Site!

Over the past few weeks I’ve been familiarizing myself with WordPress. I’ve found it to be very easy to customize. Also, being able to make updates to the site without having to edit the HTML files is nice. In the past I’ve made custom content management systems for some of my clients but after discovering the power of WordPress realized that they would have probably just been happier with WordPress!

So now I’m using it! Check out the site, and see some of the things it can do. If you like it you may want to consider purchasing a site. The chompBasic and chompPlus web packages now give you a WordPress site, so check out the new services page if you’re interested!

Legacy that is Chompy Creations

Up till…well this post… this blog has practically exclusively been about DreamSphere(aka Shadow of a Dream). That probably comes as no surprise seeing as it is my game that I am currently working on. However if any of you have kept up with Chompy Creations over the years you know that there is another game that has sat quietly waiting to be made. That game is “Legend of the Destiny Swords.”

That game marks perhaps a life long dream of mine to make something awesome. It was my first big idea for a game. It has to be great and it has to be huge though. I imagine not something I should tackle by myself. Nor should such a huge undertaking be my first project.

DreamSphere is my first major game and already it's proven to be one of the biggest projects I've ever worked on, and I haven't given up on it yet, that shows promise given that its creator has ADD! The idea is to slowly work my way up to the big games, so I've starting with a relatively simple 2.5D platformer but added RPG elements to it, not as easy as I may have hoped for but it hasn't been too bad so far.

I definitely look forward to the day I can start working Legend of the Destiny Swords. I have already drafted some really cool characters and even started writing a pretty detailed script for the game's story, though unfortunately I haven't gotten very far. The game has to at least be as epic as any of Sqaure Enix's Final Fantasy games. The game itself though is more like Star Ocean with its attempt to combine both medieval fantasy with science fiction elements.

If only I could clone myself, if I had another person with my ambitions and skills in video game making I might very well be able to make some pretty impressive stuff. I am hoping that completely DreamSphere will either attract prospective game makers or give me enough of a profit to hire people and form an official game team. I suppose the *secret* third option would be to join another team, but I don't know if I could do it, not being able to call all the shots would be difficult. Certainly if anyone has a team that needs members I'd consider it.

I shall end this post with some DreamSphere news…

I've started working on revamping the animation for Maleia. I've cleaned up some of the moments a little bit and it's looking good. Once I get a few good looking levels made and get all of Maleia's animations looking good I'll post a gameplay video up.

Take a guess at what animation I am working on here. *HINT* It has to do with the running stuff I've been talking about lately. It's the animation for stopping after you've been running! All the platformers do it, you don't come to a dead stop from a run, you skid to a stop.

Why is she a pretty shade of Magenta you ask? Who knows…I guess the skin texture is in the wrong directory or something but everything works fine in game.

Chompz out!
